Here's a 61 year old piece of DAFC memorabilia - a postcard issued by the Daily Express, showing the Pars team line-up from season 1956/57.
A run of only 1 victory in the final 13 games saw Dunfermline relegated from Division One that season, in an era when there were 2 divisions of 18 and 19 teams. Had they gained 1 extra point, they would have avoided relegation. Charlie Dickson, in his second season with Dunfermline, scored 13 goals in 27 League games plus 2 more in Cups.
Here is the 1956/57 Division One table (2 points for a win):
In the Scottish Cup, Dunfermline defeated Morton 3-0 before being knocked out in the last 16, going down 1-0 to Morton at Cappielow.
The Pars won their League Cup group, winning 3, drawing 2 and losing 1 game in home and away games against St Mirren, Queen of the South and Kilmarnock. In the quarter finals, played over 2 legs, Dunfermline lost 6-0 to Celtic at Parkhead before winning the home leg 3-0. Celtic went onto win the competition.
The seeds of future Pars teams, including the 1961 Scottish Cup winning side, were contained in the 1956/57 squad. Charlie Dickson, George Peebles and Ron Mailer all remained with the club and were in the Cup winning team of 1961.
The following season, 1957/58, saw promotion gained from Division Two, finishing runners-up to Stirling Albion. Charlie Dickson scored 38 goals in all competitions that season. The team scored 120 League goals in 36 games. Dunfermline spent the following 14 seasons in the top flight until relegation in 1971/72.
