The Pars Under 20s team earned their third victory in the SPFL Development League this season against Dundee on Monday evening at East End Park. John Potter selected 4 over-age players in his team: Callum Fordyce, Nat Wedderburn, Kallum Higginbotham and David Hopkirk. It was a mixed night for the senior players: Fordyce had a good game, up against Rory Loy (who already has 3 goals for the Dundee first team this season). Wedderburn had a quiet game and seemed to be carrying an injury when he was substituted in the 60th minute. Higginbotham was the most talented player on the field and showed some excellent touches, accurate crosses, and was unlucky not to score with at least 3 effort from outside the box. Hopkirk, impressive in the previous Under 20s game against Hearts, was less effective in this game, and missed an excellent chance to score after 10 minutes, rounding the goalkeeper before a heavy touch prevented him from putting the ball into an empty net.
Dunfermline took the lead in the 26th minute when Callum Smith took advantage of some indecision in the Dundee defence, to place the ball beyond Dundee keeper David Mitchell. Smith had another chance to double the lead but shot over the bar, while Scott Lochhead was unlucky not to score after 30 minutes, getting away from his marker and hitting a shot that Mitchell did well to turn round the post. The amount of possession and goal attempts by Dunfermline should have seen a much more comfortable lead built up by half time.
The Pars continued to attack the Dundee goal in the opening 15 minutes of the second half but as is often the case in football, when a dominant team cannot put a game out of reach, the opposition begin to threaten. Although Pars keeper Cammy Gill was not forced to make any particularly great saves, he had to be alert after spending all of the game to that point as a virtual spectator. Gill's handling was confident and the defence was well-marshalled by Callum Fordyce and Euan Spark.
Higginbotham and Smith had further attempts at goal for Dunfermline but were unable to add to the single goal lead.
The victory takes Dunfermline to ninth place in the 17 team SPFL Development League.
