John Potter's Under 20s team turned in an impressive performance to defeat Berwick Rangers 3-1 in the Scottish Youth Cup at East End Park on Sunday afternoon. Goals from Ciaran Lafferty, sub James Thomas with a penalty, and Callum Smith saw the young Dunfermline team overcome their opponents in extra time after the game finished 1-1 in 90 minutes.
A warm, sunny afternoon saw a good number of fans take their seats in the main stand, including a good travelling support from Berwick who made their presence known when their team scored.
The first half was entertaining but goalless. Lafferty and Smith both missed good opportunities to put Dunfermline ahead. The opening goal came after 60 minutes when Lafferty scored from close range after good work by Reece Duncan. Berwick equalised with a great long range shot from Lloyd Fiddler in the 73rd minute, giving Pars keeper Cammy Gill no chance.
Dunfermline scored twice in the opening period of extra time: in the 99th minute, James Thomas was fouled in the box and took the penalty kick himself, confidently tucking the ball into the corner of the net. Callum Smith's perseverance paid off just before the first half of extra time ended when he capitalised on sloppy defending to score the Pars' third goal.
The two subs used - Thomas, and Evan Horne - both had a positive impact on the game, while Paul Allan had a composed game in central defence, reading the game well. Conner Duthie impressed at left back, and the outstanding performer was captain Johnny Galloway in midfield. The whole team played well, playing a passing game that was good to watch.
